When my husband and I married in 2007, the last thing we expected was infertility.
From mid-2008 to early 2009, it was suspected that I had PCOS, but not confirmed. My doctor at the time was quick to dismiss that I could have PCOS simply because I wasn’t overweight, even though all the signs were there. She refused to ultrasound me. Other than telling me “you’re anovulatory”, she was no help. She handed me a 6-month prescription for Clomid and said, “Good luck, and call me if you get pregnant.”
In February 2009, I requested my medical file and politely told her that my care was worth more than the effort she was willing to put into my case, and I fired her. After that my medical life truly changed for the better. I found the doctor that I still see today and she confirmed the diagnosis by ultrasound: I have PCOS. This meant that natural conception would not be easy for me, but she was willing to run the race, and I was so grateful to find a medical professional who was on my team.
In August 2009 we found out that our 7th round of Clomid, Metformin, and Novarel worked and we were expecting our first miracle! After journeying through infertility, I was shocked to find out that I was facing a high-risk pregnancy due to vasa previa, but regardless, I was going to be a mom! Zoey Elizabeth joined our family in March 2010 (35 weeks gestation + 3.5 week NICU stay) and has been an amazing child to raise.
When she turned two in March 2012, we decided we were ready to make her a big sister, so we began the journey to grow our family again.
Our Timeline to Baby #2
Here is what our 7+ years of waiting for baby #2 have looked like for our family. You’ll notice we had tried everything except IVF before we got pregnant naturally (5 years, 3 months of waiting), which eventually led to miscarriage.
March 2012 – April 2013
1 YEAR TTC. Tracked cycles, tried naturally. Irregular, mostly anovulatory.
April – September 2013
Femara + Estradiol Cycles. Anovulatory. Uterine lining too thin for pregnancy.
October – December 2013
100mg Clomid. Ovidrel trigger. Prometrium. Response to Clomid declined each month. Uterine lining responded well to natural remedies!
150mg Clomid. 500mg Metformin. The Clomid increase was too much for my lining to handle. Canceled Ovidrel + IUI. Crushed spirit. Decided to take a break.
February – June 2014
2 YEARS TTC. Natural course. TTC break. Irregular cycles in Feb. and March. April-June: cycles regulated thanks to natural supplements and I was ovulating! No pregnancy. Daily: prenatal, maca, l-arginine, royal jelly, vit E, vit B complex. Regularly: red raspberry leaf tea, pomegranate juice, avocado
July – September 2014
Natural course. Irregular, anovulatory cycles. Tried acupuncture and NAET. Daily: prenatal, maca, l-arginine, royal jelly. Regularly: red raspberry leaf tea, pomegranate juice, avocado
October – December 2014
3-month trial of 150mg Clomid, CDs 5-9. O’d on CDs 16, 17, and 19. 3 BFNs.
January – Mid-October 2015
3 YEARS TTC. Focused on Zoey and went to Disney World.
Mid-October – Early November 2015
Follistim Cycle #1: did injections for 24 days. No ovulation.
Follistim Cycle #2: 125 IU for 10 days resulted in 3 beautiful follicles measuring 18, 19, and 20mm each and a 10mm uterine lining! Novarel trigger shot on CD 11; IUI on CD 12. P4 on 5dpIUI = 22. Luteal phase failed at 10dpIUI.
Follistim Cycle #3: 150 IU. 40mm cyst popped up. Watched cyst shrink down to 24mm range. CD 17 revealed 24mm cyst still hanging out, plus 17mm and 16mm follicles. Ovidrel trigger shot on CD 18, IUI on CD 19. Started progesterone on 4dpIUI. Luteal phase failed at 12dpIUI.
Follistim Cycle #4: 200 IU. HSG #2 on CD5. Tubes clear! 30mm cyst before HSG, disappeared after HSG. CD18: 7 follies 13-20mm. CD 19: Trigger #1, no IUI due to ice storm. 🙁 Tried on our own. 5dpo: Trigger #2. 6dpo: P4 = 120!!! 15-day LP. Beta #1 = 8, Beta #2 = 3. BFN or chemical pregnancy.
February 2016 – June 2017
4-5 YEARS TTC. 16-month break to recover emotionally, physically and financially. I was very sad but started a journey of learning to love myself and learning to live life abundantly in spite of PCOS, in spite of infertility, and in spite of what I thought was best for myself. I literally handed it over to God and said: “take it, I don’t want this pain anymore.” You can read more about the beginning of that journey here.
I got the shock of my life on June 28, 2017, when I discovered that I was pregnant naturally! After 5 years + 3 months of infertility, baby #2 was finally on the way!
July – August 2017 > MISCARRIAGE
Our surprise pregnancy went from heartbeat (6 weeks) to no heartbeat (7.5 weeks) and ended in miscarriage (10.5 weeks). The confirming ultrasound was on our 10-year wedding anniversary. While we are devastated by this loss, we are hopeful that if we got pregnant once without treatment, hopefully, we can again. I passed the sac and placenta on August 13, 2017, at home and it was the single most awful moment of my life.
September 2017 – December 2018
6 YEARS TTC. After the miscarriage, I started using essential oils to help get my cycles on track. Not preventing pregnancy. No pregnancy achieved.
January 2019 – Today
7 YEARS TTC. Found out my thyroid needs assistance. Addressing it. Praying about adoption.
