Today, I am doing something a little different and I’m going to ask you to take less than 5 minutes to sign a petition that means a lot to those of us suffering from infertility. If you could share it, that would be awesome, but I’m really just asking you to sign it yourself. For those who don’t know, my insurance doesn’t cover a single penny of infertility treatment. Not only that, but they won’t cover anything diagnostic. So basic hormone panels to check my levels, even if they’re completely unrelated to trying to conceive, they will reject it. This happened recently when I went for an annual physical and wanted to get my PCOS-related labs run to see where my levels stood… rejection. They’ll cover anything except hormones.
I’m sorry, but that’s just stupid.
Part of me can understand why they don’t want to cover treatment that will result in a pregnancy they will have to cover. They see it as an elective treatment, as if I was getting plastic surgery or something. But here’s the kicker: they will cover anything preventative… if I wanted to get a hysterectomy (whether elective or emergency), they’d cover it. If I wanted birth control pills, they’d cover it. Some insurance companies will even cover an abortion 100%, but they won’t cover a penny of infertility diagnostics and treatment.
Are. You. KIDDING. Me?!
Infertility is treated by insurance companies as something elective that we just have to get over and deal with, and that needs to change. Will you join me in signing this petition? 100,000 signatures are needed by Thursday, August 6 for this to move forward.
