I think I just had a chemical pregnancy.
Let me back up a bit and explain. Last Tuesday, I had a beta and follow-up P4 drawn. The beta was only a 1. The P4 was a 22. My OB actually felt pretty hopeful. She was certain we had caught the earliest of BFPs because at that point, my progesterone level was not in the premenstrual zone. It was too high. Most OBs consider anything 5 and under as BFN, but she doesn’t. It’s not always correct so she holds onto hope, especially with a progesterone level of 22. She figured I would be pregnant and that it would just take longer than typical to see a BFP on a home test. I felt like I was out so I just quit taking the progesterone supplements, but then…
My period was three days late.
We were pretty hopeful yesterday. I was texting with her off and on all day about my being late and how I had spotted for a few days. She encouraged me to take a pee test. Three days late, no period, I was off the progesterone supplements for a couple days at that point because I thought I was out, it should have been positive. My temp on my chart went UP, too, by the way. UP. Significantly. Without any supplements in my system. That could have and should have meant pregnancy.
Only it wasn’t.
Today, I woke up, my temp bottomed out on my chart and guess what?
She didn’t say it, but I know she was thinking it.
What is a chemical pregnancy? Basically, it means that sperm met egg, cells started to form, it implanted, but something failed. Maybe a bad implantation spot, maybe a chromosomal abnormality. A chemical pregnancy happens when an egg is fertilized, but dies soon after implantation. My gut tells me that yes, I was late for a reason. And yes, I never got a positive pee test because the hCG just never reached the right level to be detected on a pee test. For all we know, it got as high as 10 and then failed.
When I take Clomid, my cycles are never late when it’s negative. NEVER. It’s to-the-day on time, even if I am still taking progesterone supplements the day that CD 1 hits, I’m never late. Even if I take my progesterone supplement in the AM at 15 DPO, I still get my period that afternoon.
Apparently chemical pregnancies are very common and most women don’t even realize they have them. Unless you’re TTC. Then you know because you’re desperate and hopeful every day.
My OB reminded me to never stop taking the progesterone supplements unless my period started or we confirmed with a beta if the hCG level is less than 1. Or if I am 13 weeks pregnant. I’ll listen next time, but it really didn’t matter in this case. My period wasn’t late because of the supplements. I think it was late because of a chemical pregnancy, and right now I need to figure out how to mentally process that.
